Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced Aug 7 as National Handloom Day to mark the 1905 Swadeshi movement. He called for increased use of handloom products, saying a 5% increase in consumption will increase revenues by 33% for the sector. In recent years, we have seen the overwhelming demand from around the world for handloom sarees made from the purest of silk fabrics featuring exquisite embroidery, embellishment work as well as printed designs that are the very epitome of ethnic fashion regalia.
