India houses some of the rare, ethereal and rich forms of crafts that have been passed on from generations to generation. Lets take a look at one such art style -IKKAT

The technique of ikkat weaving, which requires true precision and skill is believed to be brought in the town of pochmapally from chirala where it is locally called as chit-ku. The resulting creation would expectedly surface in a lyrical colour extravaganza of finesse and precision.

The Making of Ikkat

Ikkat dyeing technique is used to pattern textiles that employs a resist dyeing process on the warpfibres, the weft fibres or in the rare and costly ‘double ikkat’ both warp and weft, prior to dyeing and weaving. The process starts with the warp or weft threads being bundled and bound with rubber bands which can resist the action of dye colors. The tying of threads before dyeing should be very precise to get the geometrical shape. The bundles then are tied to a wooden frame and put into the dye vat. Here they are given repeated dye treatments to generate bands of pattern. Essentially the core fabric materials used in the ikkat styles are silk or cotton.Once the dying process is completed, then starts the complex and intricate process of weaving these threads into a stable piece of fabric. The end result is a piece of cloth bathed and glittered in colorful patterns. More often than not ikkat is associated with sarees.
Ikkats can be single ikkats where only the warp is tie-dyed and inter weaved with weft (single colored or uncolored) or Double ikkats where both warp and weft are tie-dyed and positioned in such a way that both warp and weft reinforce each other at the resist dyed place to achieve the sari design.
Traditionally colors from plants, flowers and barks of trees were used as dyes in the process. But in recent times, increase in demand for Orissa ikkat has fueled the need to use chemical dyes as well.
