India\u2019s diverse culture is defined by it\u2019s varied customs, languages, food, music and artwork. In today\u2019s post we will introduce you to a form of art that is still being practiced by people for aeons and is being passed from one generation to another in the form a bequest.<\/p>\n

A Benarasi sari is a sari made in Varanasi<\/span>, a city which is also called Benares or Banaras. This fabric is usually infused with gold and silver brocade work, i.e., zari on silk fabrics and is enhanced with intricate floral patterns and other Mughal era influenced motifs. The heavy thread work and fine silk fabric makes them heavy and it is this element that brings the grandeur of the Benarasi saree <\/a>.<\/p>\n

There are four main varieties of Benarasi sari, which includes pure silk (Katan), Organza (Kora) with Zari<\/i> and silk; Georgette, and Shattir, and according to design process, they are divided into categories like, Jangla, Tanchoi, Vaskat, Cutwork, Tissue and Butidar.<\/p>\n

Brocade the characteristic weave of the fabric is created thrusting the zari threads between warp at calculated intervals so as to evolve the design line by line. Based on the design which is going to be infused in the fabrics<\/a>, punch cards are created. A single design of an Indian Benarasi saree<\/a> requires hundreds of perforated cards for the implementation of the idea. Different threads and colors are used on the loom to knit the prepared perforated cards. The knit perforated cards are then paddled in a systematic manner. This is done to ensure that the main weaving picks up the right colors and pattern. This process takes about 15 days up to a month to weave, to sometimes, even 6 months.
