No Indian attire today enjoys the kind of acceptance and popularity that a sari does. Being a staple dress code for most of Indian women, this international popularity is no small feat. Being traditional attire for centuries, the popularity of a sari has not diminished over the years but has only increased manifolds. Technically, a sari refers to a rectangular piece of cloth with the usual length of five to six yards, with some varieties extending even to nine yards. The most common style is to wrap a saree around the waist, with one end then draped over the shoulder baring the midriff. The sari is usually worn with two essential accessories, namely a blouse and a petticoat.

As an outfit, the possibilities that a sari provides, is endless. A sari is always sensuous, whether made of cotton, silk, georgette, velvet, satin, chiffon or a mix of varied fabrics. A sari is always elegant, whether in bright colors or pastel hues. A sari looks classy and drapes a woman in elegance, without any bias for size, height, age and complexion. It is one of those rare outfits that beautifully suits any occasion, as a festive wear, formal wear, casual outfit, party wear or more recently as a most wanted red carpet wear. Therefore sari clothing and sari shopping is now considered a fashion experience in itself.

Women in different parts of India follow different ways of draping the sari. Women in the state of Maharashtra wear a nine yard long sari in dhoti style. The Southern style of wearing the sari is, however with pleats in the front and the pallu falling over the left shoulder. Bengali women wear in a pattern where the pallu falls over their shoulders to the front. Another very popular style of wearing sari among Indian women is the Gujarati style of wearing the ulta-pallu sari.

Fabric and embellishment on a sari also differs in different parts of the country. In the South, silk saris reign supreme. cotton saris on the other hand are very popular in Bengal and Maharastra. For weddings and special occasions silk saris are the norm. Whatever the region, women across the world have universally embraced sari fashion and accordingly the humble choli also has emerged as the much coveted designer sari blouse Fashion designers today take pride in creating contemporary sari collections .
