No Indian attire today enjoys the kind of acceptance and popularity that a saree does. Being a staple dress code for most of Indian women, this international popularity is no small feat. Being traditional attire for centuries, the popularity of a saree has not diminished over the years but has only increased manifolds. Though a simple comfortable drape, a saree instantly lends unmatched class and feminine sophistication to the wearer.

Technically, a saree refers to a rectangular piece of cloth with the usual length of five to six yards, with some varieties extending even to nine yards. The most common style is to wrap a saree around the waist, with one end then draped over the shoulder baring the midriff. The saree is usually worn with two essential accessories, namely a blouse and a petticoat.

As an outfit, the possibilities that a saree provides, is endless. A saree is always sensuous, whether made of cotton, silk, georgette, velvet, satin, chiffon or a mix of varied fabrics. A saree is always elegant, whether in bright colors or pastel hues. A saree looks classy and drapes a woman in elegance, without any bias for size, height, age and complexion. It is one of those rare outfits that beautifully suits any occasion, as a festive wear, formal wear, casual outfit, party wear or more recently as a most wanted red carpet wear. Therefore saree clothing and saree shopping is now considered a fashion experience in itself.

Women in different parts of India follow different ways of draping the sari. Women in the state of Maharashtra wear a nine yard long saree in dhoti style. The Southern style of wearing the sari is, however with pleats in the front and the pallu falling over the left shoulder. Bengali women wear in a pattern where the pallu falls over their shoulders to the front. Another very popular style of wearing saree among Indian women is the Gujarati style of wearing the ulta-pallu sari.

Fabric and embellishment on a saree also differs in different parts of the country. In the South, silk sarees reign supreme. cotton sarees on the other hand are very popular in Bengal and Maharastra. For weddings and special occasions silk sarees are the norm. Whatever the region, women across the world have universally embraced saree fashion and accordingly the humble choli also has emerged as the much coveted designer saree blouse Fashion designers today take pride in creating contemporary saree collections . Gone are the days when women had to scout saree shops to acquire her desired sari.
